Triple H addressed the fallout of Thursday's explosive WrestleMania Kickoff press event in Las Vegas, in which The Rock and Roman Reigns appeared to form a bond over their familial bonds when confronted by Cody Rhodes, who revealed he will challenge The Tribal Chief for the Undisputed WWE Universal Championship at The Showcase of the Immortals in Philadelphia.

Triple H kicked off SmackDown, joined in the squared circle by Raw and SmackDown general managers Adam Pearce and Nick Aldis, to address the events of Thursday's WrestleMania Kickoff press conference.

He eluded to a power struggle between him and The Rock before acknowledging that the final decision lies with him. It will be Cody Rhodes vs. Roman Reigns at WrestleMania in Philadelphia for the Undisputed WWE Universal Championship.

From there, Aldis and Pearce announced that the challenger for Seth Rollins' World Heavyweight Championship will be determined in Perth, Australia at Elimination Chamber.

    Participants include:

    • Drew McIntyre
    • AJ Styles
    • Bobby Lashley
    • Ivar
    • Randy Orton
    • Dominik Mysterio
    • The Miz
    • LA Knight
    • Sami Zayn
    • Logan Paul
    • Kevin Owens
    • "Big" Bronson Reed

Matches to determine the six Superstars who will compete at the premium live event will begin on tonight's broadcast.

McIntyre hit the ring, took a few shots at CM Punk, took credit for Rhodes choosing to finish his story against Reigns, and vowed to save the world title by beating Rollins at WrestleMania.

This was a red-hot start to the show that intensified the tensions we saw between The Rock and Triple H in Las Vegas, reiterated the main event of the biggest show of the year, and turned attention to deciding a No. 1 contender to Rollins through a series of what could be super in-ring contests, all culminating with the Elimination Chamber on February 24.

    Great stuff.

    Top Moments and Takeaways

    • The boos were turned up realhigh for The Rock in the recap video from Thursday's WrestleMania Kickoff, cementing the idea that he is the intended heel in this equation.
    • "Maybe some people don't know their role," Triple H said, the first of a couple of references to The Great One.
    • "I don't really care where you sit...the answers come from one place and one place only, and you are looking at it."
    • "IT DOESN'T MATTER if you don't like that decision."
    • McIntyre referring to himself as "DM Hunk" while keeping his issues with CM Punk at the forefront is the sort of thing that is going to inadvertently turn him into the cool babyface.

Elimination Chamber Qualifier: Drew McIntyre vs. AJ Styles

Drew McIntyre advanced to the Elimination Chamber match with a victory over AJ Styles in the night's opening contest, thanks in no part to a distraction from LA Knight.

Mounting tensions between the two reared their head late in the match when McIntyre hurled his opponent at Knight, who accidentally (or not) poured water on The Phenomenal One.

Shots were taken at The Megastar, which provided just enough of a distraction for McIntyre to blast Styles with the Claymore for the win.

Any time two pros like McIntyre and Styles get together, there's a certain level of quality to be expected. They had a strong match, supported by the reaction of the audience. Could it have been done without the incessant interference of Knight?

Sure, but it furthered a feud, which will only intensify now that Styles has seen his dreams of headlining WrestleMania dashed.

    • Justified "this is awesome" chants for the match. No Triple H tweet, though.
    • It appears as though we may be heading toward Knight vs. Styles, either in Perth or at WrestleMania. What that match does for either guy as it stands now is questionable, but it is refreshing to see that The Megastar will not fade into the background.

Elimination Chamber Qualifier: Bianca Belair vs. Michin

Bianca Belair is one step closer to returning to the championship match at WrestleMania with her victory over Michin in an Elimination Chamber Qualifier.

The EST overcame a game opponent, absorbing everything the first lady of The OC threw at her and delivering a Kiss of Death to cash her ticket to the Perth, Australia premium live event.

This was the latest in a series of strong in-ring performances from Michin, who should be in line for a bigger push post-WrestleMania. She has repeatedly proven herself and it is no accident that she is receiving the television time that she is right now.

Beliar winning was the right call in that she is an elite performer in the women's division and brings star power to the Elimination Chamber match.

She may not win on February 24, but one would be hard-pressed to find anyone who would not want to see her and Michin run it back at some point in the near future.

Bayley Discussed Splitting from Damage CTRL

Bayley and Iyo Sky are headed for a clash at WrestleMania, with the latter's WWE Women's Championship up for grabs, but it was another former Damage CTRL teammate from whom the 2024 Women's Royal Rumble winner found herself demanding answers.

Dakota Kai interrupted Bayley and found herself on the defensive, explaining that she did not know how to tell her friend that Sky, Asuka, and Kairi Sane were plotting her ousting from Damage CTRL.

This brought out the heels, with Damage CTRL encircling the squared circle. Kai grabbed a chair and at first, teased hitting Bayley with it before helping fend the heels off.

Though Kai appeared to help Bayley, there is still tension that exists between them and, just as the babyface did with her now former teammates a week ago, it would not be surprising to find out that Kai was playing her.

Especially considering some of the instances in recent memory where Kai exhibited the same reactions to Bayley that the rest of Damage CTRL did.

Still, this was a logical next step given Kai's absence a week ago and helps build intrigue with just under two months of television to go before WrestleMania.

No. 1 Contender's Match: Tyler Bate and Pete Dunne vs. DIY

6 of 8

WWE SmackDown Results: Winners, Live Grades, Reaction, Highlights From Feb. 9 (6)

Tyler Bate and Pete Dunne will square off with Judgment Day's Finn Balor and Damian Priest for the Undisputed WWE Tag Team Championship at Elimination Chamber by way of their victory over DIY's Johnny Gargano and Tommaso Ciampa.

The match was every bit as good as you would expect from the collection of talent involved and if there was one negative, it was that it was limited by the confines of television time.

    WWE @WWE

THIS IS TAG-TEAMWORK AT IT'S FINEST! 👏👏👏<br><br>Only ONE team will get the opportunity to challenge <a href="https://twitter.com/hashtag/TheJudgmentDay?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">#TheJudgmentDay</a> for the Undisputed WWE Tag Team Titles! The action was nonstop, saw Bate pull off a hellish display of strength, the likes of which earned him the "Big Strong Boi" moniker, and concluded with Dunne countering Gargano's slingshot spear into the Bitter End for the victory.

The idea of Dunne and Bate against Balor and Priest should excite anyone who loves great in-ring action, especially of the tag team variety. On a show that will have plenty of other higher-profile stars and happenings, it could very well be the show-stealing match on the PLE.

    • Bate hoisted Gargano on his shoulders for an airplane spin while simultaneously delivering a big swing to Ciampa in a hell of a visual.
    • Bate kicked out of Project Ciampa in a pretty sweet near-fall.
    • Backstage, Kevin Owens revealed he would battle Dominik Mysterio in an Elimination Chamber qualifier and said he would dedicate the match to the greatest luchador in history, Rey Mysterio.
    • Truth interrupted Owens, calling him "Miz" and telling him not to let "Nick" catch him. Owens asked, "Nick Mysterio?" to which Truth replied, "No, Nick Aldis." Funny.

Elimination Chamber Qualifier: Sami Zayn vs. Randy Orton

7 of 8

WWE SmackDown Results: Winners, Live Grades, Reaction, Highlights From Feb. 9 (7)

    Credit: WWE.com

Randy Orton will return to the Elimination Chamber match for the ninth time in Perth via his victory over Sami Zayn in the main event of Friday's show.

Zayn dominated the action for the most part, capitalizing on the previously injured back of The Viper after dumping him on the announce table. Frustration set in late, though, as he failed to put the third-generation star down for the count.

Late, he springboarded, bouncing off the ropes and eating an RKO as Orton proved his words from earlier in the night prophetic: all it takes is one.

The show went off the air with Drew McIntyre confronting Orton, teasing renewed issues between the two and hyping two top-tier stars who have already qualified for the February 24 premium live event's namesake match.

    • Elimination Chamber Qualifying Matches for next week's show: Logan Paul vs. The Miz, Kevin Owens vs. Dominik Mysterio, Shotzi vs. Tiffany Stratton, and Zelina Vega vs. Naomi.
    • Paul insisting he gets "the Rock treatment" by flying in, slapping fools, and leaving was instead of working free TV matches, was a funny bit.
    • Also, The Rock and Roman Reigns will be in the house with responses to Triple H and the WrestleMania main event.
    • The staredown between McIntyre and Orton to close the show felt like a big deal and recalled their intense rivalry from 2020 when the latter ended McIntyre's first run as WWE Champion. Hopefully, that will be recalled in the coming weeks.

Overall Grade

8 of 8

WWE is cooking right now and this episode was reflective of it.

It started by addressing the hottest topic in professional wrestling and enhancing it, with Triple H's defiance in the face of The Rock and Roman Reigns' shared power, and proceeded to set the framework of the night's event by revealing the Elimination Chamber qualifiers, with the winners advancing to Perth to compete for a shot at the World Heavyweight Championship at WrestleMania.

We had another banger of a match from Michin, this time with the equally excellent Bianca Belair, and saw Pete Dunne, Tyler Bate, Johnny Gargano, and Tommaso Ciampa prove that even lacking adequate television time, they can still steal the show.

Both Drew McIntyre vs. AJ Styles and Randy Orton vs. Sami Zayn were strong matches and both furthered storylines within. In the case of the former, it was the intensification of the Styles-LA Knight rivalry while in the latter, it was Zayn's quest to prove his worth as a contender to the world title falling just short.

This show knew the stories it was working with, executed them extremely effectively, and delivered from an in-ring perspective to boot. With potentially more eyes on the product, this show delivered. Big time.
