On Thursday, August 24, 2023, Gennie Nell Freeman (Mother Freeman), went home to be with the Lord, peacefully in her sleep. She closed her eyes in this earthly realm and awoke in the divine glory of the Lord! We take comfort in knowing that she is rejoicing and dancing in the presence of the Lord! And if you truly knew her, you know she is doing her “Holy Ghost Dance”! Mother Freeman was born in Picken County, Alabama. She was one of eight children born to the late Cecil Horton and Clodie Horton. She accepted Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior at an early age and was baptize in a creek in Alabama. She met and married her true love, the late Eddie Calvin Freeman on February 23, 1952, and together they built a strong legacy of love that still lasts to this day. Mother Freeman was a true Gospel Diva! She was the essence of fashion, enthrone with hats to match every occasion, and knew how to live and love in ways that can only come when you live your life with the love of Christ. Her favorite sayings were “Let go and Let God”, “Lord, help me to accept the things I cannot change” and “Thank God for Jesus”. Her words of wisdom will continue to speak to us as we celebrate the life and the rich legacy that she has left us to cherish.

Mother Freeman joined Mt. Sinai Baptist Church in 1976, under the leadership of Pastor Solomon Smith and continued under the leadership of Pastor Gerald Wilcoxon. She flourished in ministry work for the Lord, as she tirelessly and with great spiritual enthusiasm did what God had placed in her heart to do. Mother Freeman worked with The Missions, Food Pantry, Vacation Bible School, Clothing Ministry, Mothers Board, Nurses Guild, Kitchen Ministry and extending her hands to whatever was needed in and for the Church. She was a powerful Prayer Warrior, and she loved reading and studying God’s Word. Mother Freeman understood that serving God is not locationary. For the last three years, she also worked tirelessly at The First Baptist Church of Lake Forest, under the leadership of her Son-In-Law and as she proudly called him, her Best Friend, Pastor Todd E. Fletcher. She toiled weekly preparing and delivering bags of food for the Mobile Food Pantry Ministry, helped prepare and serve food for the Love on A Plate Ministry, and helped chaperone the youth on various excursions. She often would say, “That little church would work you to death!” Mother Freeman was a long-time employee of Daisy Nursery. One of her greatest accomplishments was being able to further her education with the encouragement of Dr. Daisy Brooks.

Gennie Nell Freeman leaves to cherish the memories of her extraordinary life, her Son, Eddie C. Freeman Jr. of Wadsworth IL, Daughters Bettie (Gerald) Brown of Gurnee IL, and First Lady Reverend Pattie (Pastor Todd E.) Fletcher of Waukegan, IL. Special friends; Odessa Willams, Delouise Nelson, Juanita Wright, Donald & Elaine Wiggins, and First Lady Janice Wilcoxon. God also blessed her with a host of Nieces, Nephews, Family and Friends, whom she loved dearly.
