the brat pack who starred in so many movies including "pretty in pink" and "the breakfast club" just to name a few. they look back at how that branding affected their lives and careers in a new documentary calls "brats." we were there for the premiere last night. >> gio: and pat sajak saying good-bye on "wheel of fortune." his last episode hosting the iconic game show airing just hours ago. we have his good-bye message and some clues about his plan for the future. that's all coming up here. >> whit: first breaking news we're following from overnight, the israel-hamas war. israel says four hostages who were kidnapped in the october 7th massacre were just rescued. let's go back to abc's marcus moore in tel aviv with the latest. marcus, good morning. >> reporter: good morning again. those four hostages are said to be in good condition this morning after a joint daytime rescue operation. the hostages include 25-year-old noa argamani. she and the three others were among dozens of people kidnapped from the nova music festival on october 7th. of course, images of her being abducted went viral after the

hamas attacks. while this morning, we are seeing images of her being rescued and talking to prime minister netanyahu over the phone. the idf says this operation took place at two buildings in central gaza. it involved land, sea, and ground strikes, as well as helicopters. and the hamas-run gaza health ministry this morning is accusing israel of committing a massacre during the raids. the ministry saying at least 47 people were killed and dozens injured. it follows deadly strikes this week on a pair of u.n. schools turned shelters. the gaza ministry of health saying more than 50 palestinians were killed in those strikes. the idf has said hamas has been using those sites to operate and carry out attacks. now, back to the rescue operation just this morning, israeli officials say it was intelligence-based and that the green light was given at the last minute by the defense minister and the prime minister. as you know the israeli government has been under intense pressure to bring home the hostages.

this operation being seen as a small success and, gio, we have seen spontaneous celebrations in the streets and on the beaches here in tel aviv as news of this rescue spread. gio? >> gio: all right, marcus, thank you for bringing us that breaking news from israel. the news about the hostages being rescued comes as president biden is in france where he's been taking part in events marking the 80th anniversary of d-day. french president emmanuel macron hosting biden in paris with a state visit and abc's mary bruce is right there in paris with more on this. good morning, again, mary. >> reporter: good morning, again, gio. president biden has a packed day here in paris as he continues to mark the 80th anniversary of d-day. and president biden is arguing that the fight for democracy is as vital now as it was then, urging everyone to listen and learn from the voices of the past. >> they ask us what will we do. >> reporter: president biden standing on the edge of the

cliffs scaled by american forces on d-day saying those soldiers are calling america to action. linking the fight for freedom then with the fight to defend ukraine now. >> they're not asking us to scale these cliffs, but they're asking us to stay true to what america stands for. >> reporter: biden speaking at the same site where 40 years ago president reagan delivered one of his most iconic speeches. >> these are the boys of pointe du hoc. [ applause ] these are the men who took the cliffs. these are the heroes who helped end a war. >> reporter: and while biden didn't mention donald trump by name, the contrasts were clear. the president pitting his view of america's role as a global leader against trump's isolationist america first stance. >> does anyone doubt that they would want america to stand up against putin's aggression here in europe today? >> reporter: earlier biden meeting with ukrainian president zelenskyy, apologizing for the delay in approving new military aid and blaming republicans.

super bowl and having the off-season i'm having, living the dream, baby. >> reporter: the 34-year-old three-time super bowl champion has been making the most of it. >> my fellow americans -- [ laughter ] -- it's nice to see you all yet again. >> do you ever catch yourself thinking, oh, i got to get back to training or recenter on football? how do you manage that? >> well, this year's been more challenging than most, so football -- it's always on my mind. i'm still in the off-season trying to set myself up for after football. i think all players should try and, you know, get that that in the off-season. >> reporter: now he's making a foray into hollywood, landing a role in ryan murphy's forthcoming fx season "grotesquerie." >> guess who i'm working with. da, da, da, da. >> are you an actor now? >> i guess you could say that. it's definitely different portraying a character and trying to find the emotions in everything and understanding the script and the scene, but it's a challenge.

i'm coachable. that's one thing i know from being in sports. >> reporter: the newly minted actor sitting down with "gma" on the set of a commercial shoot for the energy drink he invests in. >> active energy drinking, representing the u.s. of a. >> i got livi dunn in the building making accelerator look amazing. >> away from football, how do you hope that you're known? >> as a good person, man. just somebody who attacks life the right way, does things the right way, treats people kind and courteous and really inspires and influences people to do, you know, more for themselves and more for the people around them. >> reporter: and, of course, he's made time to support his girlfriend, taylor swift. >> your well talked about personal life, how do you stay true to who you are? >> when you have good family and friends around you, it makes that aspect of life that much easier. i've always been a very grounded guy. you know, it might not come off like that when i'm playing football.

>> gio: all right now to this month's "gma" book club pick, "malas," the debut novel of marcela fuentes and two women living on the texas/mexico border and a curse that reverberates across generations. welcome to "gma." >> thank you for having me. >> gio: oh, absolutely. it's so cool to have you. we can see the cover of the book. it's just fantastic and it's so witchy and interesting. tell us about this story because what's interesting about this is that you set out to write a fairytale and then this story came about. how did that happen? >> i was in a class about writing fairytales in my mfa program and i set out to write a fairytale, was very much influenced by the story of leonora, the weeping woman. >> gio: yes. >> but then it evolved into this longer 50-page story and i told my professor, i don't think i can turn this in.

it's never ending. and so he told me just to keep going with it and suddenly -- well not suddenly -- but years later i have this giant novel. >> gio: so interesting how this idea just sort of came through onto the page even though you intended to do something totally different. >> yes. the characters kind of decided that they were going to do their own thing. they were not going to stay in a fairytale. it became a novel. it became a novel about women wanting to do their own thing, living their truth and so the fairytale kind of fell by the wayside. >> gio: you decided to place them on the texas/mexico border. why was it so important to highlight that community? >> well, i grew up there and i think that the main thing was that this is kind of the place i knew, the place i wanted to speak about. it's a place that i feel like is often underscored by the sort of social and political things that happen that we see on the news every day and i wanted to give that community back its humanity.

>> janai: we are back now with broadway star exclamation point. >> gio: yes. >> janai: jenn colella in the new show "suffs: the musical." she's hear to talk about it. we are so excited you are here. first off, congrats on six tony nominations for the show. that is incredible. including best musical. what was it like when you found out about that? and six of them. >> oh, i actually invited myself over to one of my co-star's houses, jaygee macapugay, and we were there in the morning having our coffee and breakfast watching the nominations come out and we screamed and cried like we had just won the world series when we saw "suffs" being nominated and lee silverman and nicky m. james, shana -- they

just kept coming and we were like screaming and crying. it was a beautiful moment. >> janai: that's incredible. >> gio: what's so beautiful about this is that it's all about the suffragettes, who were fighting for women's right to vote. why is that so important right now? >> great question. you know, it's an election year, and so we're hoping audiences will come and see this show and feel empowered to go and exercise their right to vote that these women fought so hard for, especially in such an important year. so we're really, really hoping it empowers audiences and reminds them people fought very hard for this right. go out and exercise it. >> whit: there are some famous women connected to the show as well. hillary clinton, gloria steinem. any memorable moments? >> it's been extraordinary. hillary's been there quite a bunch, and i had a cool interaction with bill actually. they came a couple weeks ago and bill -- >> whit: bill like the former president? [ laughter ] >> yeah, you know bill.

>> whit: yeah, bill came by. >> gio: casual. >> bill came up to me and he -- [ laughter ] bill and hill. and bill said, you know, this has given her a new lease on life. she has more energy. she feels really invigorated by being part of this show and it's the power of theater. it's the power of our community. it just makes me so happy that she's been along the ride with us. >> janai: that is so cool, the hill and bill story especially. now, off the stage you've got a lot going on in life. you have a 4-month-old baby girl. >> indeed. >> janai: tell us how it's been. how has it been becoming a mother, has it changed how you approach the role? >> even you saying the word mother, i feel like my heart is on the outside of my body now. i'm looking in people's eyes and you were a baby. someone took care of you. i'm looking at every person's inner child but as -- >> whit: our inner child comes out often on this show. >> i love it. exactly right. but as far as the show goes, you know, what this is reminding me of is how important it is to raise a daughter who grows up in

good morning, i'm stephanie sierra. investigators in san francisco are working to find the person who vandalized city hall. mayor london breed says she was the target of racist and sexist graffiti. multiple city employees who came into work early wednesday discovered this graffiti. it was quickly removed. the san francisco sheriff's office says they have increased foot patrols around city hall. happening now. you might have to make arrangements if you have plans to ride caltrain. this weekend. service between san francisco and san jose will be shut down so the agency can test its new electric trains. there will be some busses between the san jose, diridon, palo alto and millbrae stations. the busses will not run into san francisco, though the shutdown is part of caltrans work to electrify the railroad with trains that are supposed to

be faster, cleaner and more efficient. the new trains are set to roll out in september. here in san francisco, the pink triangle installation is underway this morning at twin peaks in honor of pride month. the triangle covers nearly an acre, and it takes hundreds of volunteers to get it in place. the commemoration ceremony begins at 1030. it's cold out there, but getting brighter in certain spots. lisa. >> yes, we're seeing that fog debt kind of erode around the edges, but there will be more cloud cover today. here's a look at a hazy looking emeryville with moderate air quality. so as we get into more wind, the second half for your weekend, the trough lifts out. but as for now, low 60s and a lot of cloud cover. some sunshine here in the south bay. mid 50s, but you too will be under partly cloudy skies today. so overall temperatures coming down again in our inland valleys a little more so. so we'll have the breeze and a bit of sun here and there throughout the day. but then more sunshine as we get into your sunday and more heat arriving into the middle of next week. stephanie.
