CoBurn Bradshaw and Sage Steele Kimzey made their marks at last month’s College National Finals Rodeo, with Bradshaw winning the saddle bronc riding championship and Kimzey finishing as the reserve champ in bull riding.

Now the two cowboys are looking to continue their success on the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association circuit. Friday, both took steps in that direction at the Central Wyoming Rodeo.

Kimzey, who leads the PRCA bull riding world standings, finished third in the first go-round with an 82-point ride aboard The Cervi Brothers’ Mississippi Lipstick. Scottie Knapp won the go with an 84 on The Cervi Brothers’ Sling Shot, with Jeff Bertus finishing second with an 83.

It was Kimzey’s second qualified ride of the night, as he scored 66 points on Cervi Championship Rodeo’s Vitalix Blitz, but was given the option of a re-ride when the bull didn’t perform to its abilities. The move ultimately paid off for the 19-year-old.

“Anytime you can get on a good bull and win some money doing it, it's always great,” Kimzey said. “The city of Casper has always been supportive of rodeo, so it’s great to come here and put on a show for the fans.”

The re-ride not only paid off for Kimzey in the standings, but also in his pocket book, as he collected nearly $1,100 for the third-place finish. Coming into the week, Kimzey had earned almost $87,000, but was just $1,600 ahead of defending world champ J.W. Harris.

Kimzey has led the world standings for most of the year, but a tough stretch during “Cowboy Christmas” allowed Harris to close the gap.

“I had a pretty rough Fourth of July,” Kimzey said, “but I think I’ve turned it around so it’s all good.”

Bradshaw, meanwhile, made it back to Saturday’s short go with a 72-point ride on Cervi Championship Rodeo’s Fireworks.

“I didn’t know anything about the horse,” Bradshaw said, “but I guess it turned out all right. I guess Casper has been pretty good to me.”

Bradshaw, who placed in all four rounds of the CNFR and beat Sheridan College’s Zeke Thurston by 1/2 point for the saddle bronc title, hasn’t enjoyed the success that Kimzey has on the circuit, but he’s OK with that for now.

The Western Texas College graduate has won more than $14,000 competing on his permit, which puts him second behind Rusty Wright, who has earned more than $20,000 on the season. However, Wright recently bought his PRCA card, which should elevate Bradshaw to the top spot.

“Rusty is sitting first, but he’s on his card now so I don’t know how that works,” Bradshaw said. “I’m just trying to win money and get my qualifications up so I can buy my card.”

Cowboys competing on their permit only need to win $1,000 in order to buy their PRCA card – which makes them eligible to qualify for the season-ending National Finals Rodeo – but Bradshaw is content with finishing the year on his permit and then buying his card next year.

“I’m gonna try to win Rookie of the Year and make the NFR next year,” Bradshaw said. “Winning the CNFR gave me a lot of confidence because a lot of those guys I competed against are the guys I’ll be competing against for Rookie of the Year, so I know next year will be a good year to win it.”

After Saturday’s short go, Bradshaw, like the rest of his fellow competitors, was scheduled to once again hit the road. Unlike the overwhelming majority of the cowboys, though, Bradshaw is riding solo until next month, when he’ll start traveling with saddle bronc rider Alex Wright.

“Going to rodeos by yourself gets kinda boring and you sing to yourself a lot,” Bradshaw said with a laugh, “but it’s not too bad. At least I don’t have anybody telling what to do or where to go.”
