This past week, guests at Walt Disney World experienced an unexpected yet thrilling twist. The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror, the iconic drop ride at Disney’s Hollywood Studios, abruptly ceased operations. The sudden closure left many visitors perplexed and spurred a cascade of speculation. The situation quickly escalated as Disney cast members hurriedly evacuated guests from the attraction, and police officers rushed inside the foreboding Hollywood Tower Hotel.
For fans and regulars, the closure sparked déjà vu of the days when Disney California Adventure’s Tower of Terror was transformed into Guardians of the Galaxy – Mission: BREAKOUT! With Disney focusing on their celebrated IPs like Star Wars and Toy Story, many feared that the Tower of Terror’s days might be numbered. Notably, Disney doesn’t own The Twilight Zone; they license it from CBS, adding another layer of uncertainty to the ride’s future.
The Tower of Terror’s brief shutdown generated numerous theories among park-goers. A Reddit user, u/ravenclawchaser3, shared their account of the event. “Around 5:30 p.m., we saw employees clearing the entire line and store, with about 15 staff blocking entrance. A police officer gave a thumbs up after 15 minutes, and people were let back in,” they recalled. Despite the official statement of “technical difficulties,” the heavy security presence suggested otherwise.
One theory floated on Reddit — proposed by user u/I-_I-_ — suggested that the shutdown could have been triggered by someone vaping, which set off the fire alarm system. While this remains unconfirmed, it’s not uncommon for parks to experience such disruptions.
Though the attraction was back in operation the following day, neither Walt Disney World Resort nor the Orange County Sheriff’s Department have commented on the incident. This silence leaves room for speculation about what truly happened.
